Biography

Projestine is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist. He earned his MD and MMed degrees from the University of Dar es Salaam and his PhD from Uppsala University in Sweden. Throughout his career, he has held numerous leadership roles, including Head of Department, Associate Dean, and Dean of the School of Medicine at MUHAS, where he served for 20 years. Since 2022, he has been the Principal at the University of Dar es Salaam College of Health and Allied Sciences (UDSM-MCHAS).

Professor Projestine's career is marked by significant contributions to reproductive, maternal, and newborn child health. He served as the President of the Association of Gynecologists and Obstetricians of Tanzania from 2009 to 2014 and has led numerous research initiatives, both locally and internationally. Notably, he was the National Coordinator for a successful project to institutionalize Postpartum Intrauterine Devices (PPIUD) in Tanzania and other large-scale collaborative clinical trials.

He has been involved in several high-impact projects funded by organizations such as UNFPA, WHO, and UNICEF. Additionally, he has mentored undergraduate, Master's, and PhD students. With over 70 publications, Professor Projestine is a prominent figure in global health, making valuable contributions to the field through research, mentorship, and leadership.

National coordinator of PPIUD project in Tanzania, run by The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) and the Tanzania’s National Society for Gynecologists and Obstetricians (AGOTA): This is a four year [phase I] project (January 2015 to 30th December 2017  to June 2019) aiming at improving postpartum IUD uptake through institutionalisationfour-year in Tanzania. Other collaborating countries were Kenya, Sri-Lanka, India, Nepal, Bangladesh.  [FIGO Sub-grant No. TZ100215/AD01]

Tranexamic acid by the intramuscular or intravenous route for the prevention of postpartum haemorrhage in women at increased risk: a randomised placebo-controlled trial (IM WOMAN), Protocol No. NCT05562609[ClinicalTrials.gov], Jan 2023- August 2025. This is ongoing in 10 hospital Sites in Tanzania.at 10 hospital sites

women with anaemia: an International, Randomized, Double-
blind, placebo-controlled trial (WOMAN-2)-Protocol No. ISRCTN62396133, TMDA Reg. No. WEB0021/CTR/0014/03 from 24 August 2019- 30th October, 2024. Took place in five hospital sites in Tanzania.

Optimising maternal and perinatal outcomes through safe and appropriate caesarean sections in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) (C-SAFE). Involves training of Healthcare professionals to make Cesarean Delivery Safer. A Collaboration study with the University of Birmingham 

The effects of tranexamic acid on anaemia, menstrual health and the wellbeing of women: an international randomised, placebo-controlled trial among menstruating women with anaemia (WOMAN-3 Trial). Collaborative study between UDSM and LSHTM. Field work Starts very Soon in Mbeya and Dar es Salaam,  Tanzania.
