Prof. Desiderius CP MASALU is an Associate Professor of Marine Geophysics at the Institute of Marine Sciences, University of Dar es Salaam since 1987. He received his higher learning training at the prestigious University of Tokyo, Ocean Research Institute in Japan, where he obtained his MSc in 1991 and his Doctorate degree in 1994. Prior to that Prof. MASALU obtained a BSc (Geology) from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and in 1995 he obtained a BSc (Computer Science) from the American Institute for Computer Science in the USA. During his academic training at the Ocean Research Institute, University of Tokyo, Prof. MASALU participated in many marine geophysics research cruises in Japan and internationally in the Pacific Ocean. Even after returning home Prof. MASALU has participated in several international research cruises in the Indian Ocean. Prof. MASALU was Director of the Institute of Marine Sciences between 2012 – 2015, and Deputy Director from 2003 to 2009, and Head of the ICT since 2001 to 2012. He has coordinated several projects at national and regional levels e.g., ODINAFRICA, ASCLME, Nairobi Convention Clearinghouse Mechanism projects and Chief Editor of the African OceanPortal. Prof. MASALU has a broad international and regional working experience particularly in ocean data and information management in which he continues to work closely with UNESCO-IOC and its International Ocean Data and Information Exchange (IODE) network as the National Coordinator. Prof. MASALU has been a member of several committees and boards at national, regional and international levels. He is currently a member of GOOS International Steering Committee since 2019, and is also a member of the IOC-UNESCO Group of Experts for Capacity Development and the IOC-UNESCO Group of Experts for GEBCO since 2019.
