Introduction

The goals of the Tanzania Partnership Program (TPP) research program are to produce new scholarly findings, to enhance TPP development interventions in Naitolia and Milola villages in Monduli District and Lindi Municipal respectively, and to promote timely completion of MSc. Research among competitive self-financing students or those facing financial challenges. Research conducted under the TPP umbrella need to follow the objectives and process below.

Proposals from students requesting TPP research funds are due on April 30th, 2022. The grants are to fund fieldwork and other research expenses in support of a Masters Dissertation.

TPP research projects are expected to meet the following objectives. These are also the criteria for evaluating proposals (points provided):

1. Occurs in the TPP villages, (20)
2. Informs the development interventions of TPP, (30)
3. Produces new scholarly findings around TPP Core Programs, (30)
4. A feasible methodology (20)
5. Feedback to the community of research findings in the form of a report (required),
6. Meets all Tanzanian government and UDSM, SUA and TPP regulations.

In 2022, preference in awarding funds will be given to applicants whose research is related to the following TPP thematic foci and the data will be collected from two TPP sites:

• Community Health and Food Security
• Community Education, Economic Development and Youth Empowerment
• Water Resource Management and Environmental Issues

Research Financial Support

The financial limit for student proposals is $3,000 for UDSM-DUCE, UDSM-IRA and SUA students. The grants are to fund fieldwork and other research expenses in support of a Masters dissertation. In 2022, we are expecting to support six students. The grant will support two students from IRA-UDSM, two students from DUCE-UDSM and two students from SUA.

Eligibility

Self-sponsored Post-graduate students from TPP partnering institutions (UDSM, DUCE and SUA) are eligible to submit proposals. Submitted proposals must show evidence of approval by supervisors to ensure timely completion of their programs.

Approval Process

Proposals will be considered on a competitive basis. Proposals are due April 30th, 2022. They will be submitted in digital format to three people: the TPP In-Country Research Coordinator (Dr. Perpetua Urio, peturio@yahoo.com), the TPP Program Manager and MSU research coordinator (Ms. Jennifer Brewer, brewer13@msu.edu), and the TPP In-Country Coordinator (Dr. Victoria Moshy, moshyv2001yahoo.com).

The criteria for evaluating proposals are the TPP research objectives as stated above. The TPP in-country faculty will review the proposals in coordination with TPP MSU to ensure conformity with TPP and university norms. Students will be notified within three weeks whether their proposal is accepted, and if so the amount of funding granted will be given in two installments. The two installments must be processed within six months since the MSc. Completion Scholarship will only last for six months. Accepted students will sign the scholarship award contract before the funding is granted to them.

Proposal Contents

Proposals must follow guidelines for conducting postgraduate research as stipulated by respective institutions (UDSM and SUA). All proposals must include names and contacts of supervisors, as well as their approvals to avoid any completion delays that may arise in the course of finalizing the proposals after the funding has been granted.

After completing the fieldwork, the student must submit to the TPP in-Country office:

1. A technical report that documents key research findings, and their implications for TPP development interventions. The technical report is due six weeks after the research is completed.
2. A copy of the approved thesis, and any publications or presentations that come out of the research. The thesis, publications and presentations need to acknowledge the support of TPP,
3. A summary of the findings to share with the communities and to be posted to the TPP website. It should be under 3 pages.
4. A financial report.
