As a results of the institution’s efforts to support youth innovation excellence, a University of Dar es Salaam student Mr. Laetus Buberwa has been selected to participate in the AfriLabs LEAP-RE Ideathon, an international platform that celebrates innovation and solutions in renewable energy and mini-grid sectors.
According to the information received at UDSM, Buberwa will participate in the AfriLabs LEAP-RE Ideathon, a prestigious event that brings together some of the brightest minds in the field of renewable energy and mini-grid solutions scheduled from October 9th to 10th 2023, in Kigali, Rwanda.
“In this event, participants will have the opportunity to present their ideas in front of key stakeholders, potential investors, and mentors, providing them with valuable insights and networking opportunities”, stated the information.
Mr. Buberwa, one of the dedicated and forward-thinking UDSM students, applied for the Ideathon, which invited young innovators across the African continent to submit groundbreaking ideas aimed at “addressing the energy challenges faced by our region”. His innovative project, titled "Nishati Mix," has captured the attention of the AfriLabs selection committee.
"Nishati Mix is a groundbreaking initiative that involves the development of a machine capable of handling various types of plastics and organic waste, converting them into usable energy. This remarkable endeavor embodies the spirit of sustainability and innovation that our university proudly fosters”, said Buberwa.
Mr. Buberwa expressed his gratitude and excitement for the invitation: "I am truly honoured and excited to have been selected to participate in the AfriLabs LEAP-RE Ideathon. This opportunity means the world to me, and I am eager to showcase our innovative project, 'Nishati Mix,' to a wider audience”.
He said he looked forward to learning from experts, collaborating with fellow innovators, and exploring sustainable solutions for our energy challenges. “Thank you to AfriLabs for this incredible opportunity".
UDSM Coordinator for Innovation in the Directorate of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Dr. Juliana Machuve, commended Mr. Buberwa’s accomplishment and said that the University was immensely proud of his achievements.
“He represents the spirit of innovation and dedication that we nurture at the University of Dar es Salaam. Laetus is not only a talented innovator but also a testament of the impact our incubation center has on young minds. His participation in this Ideathon will also inspire fellow students with commitment to sustainable solutions”, said Dr. Machuve.
She said that the university had confidence that his participation in the AfriLabs LEAP-RE Ideathon would be a remarkable step in his journey towards creating sustainable solutions for the society. “We look forward to witnessing his success and the positive change he will bring”.
Dr. Machuve further said that Laetus's success in securing a spot at the Ideathon reflected not only his dedication but also the exceptional quality of education and support provided by UDSM. “We take immense pride in nurturing young talents like Laetus, who are committed to making a positive impact on society through their innovative ideas and initiatives”.
