The University of Dar es Salaam Vice Chancellor, Professor William-Andey Lazaro Anangisye has been appointed as member of the Governing Board of the Association of African Universities (AAU).

AAU is an organization that brings together African universities with the objective of enhancing the quality and relevance of higher education in Africa and strengthening its contribution to Africa’s development.

“To be the leading advocate for higher education in Africa, with the capacity to provide support for its member institutions in meeting national, continental and global needs”, states the AAU vision.

Prof. Anangisye joins the AAU Governing Board which comprises the President of the Association, three Vice-Presidents, and 11 executive heads of member institutions elected at the General Conference to represent the five sub-regions of Africa and the Secretary-General.

Prof. Anangisye, who is a Full Professor of Education in the School of Education at the University of Dar es Salaam, says he is very grateful for this appointment and that he is committed to “participating efficiently in realizing the AAU strategic objectives of strengthening institutional capacity of stakeholders and promoting harmonization, standardization for competitiveness and collaboration”.

According to the AAU information, the Governing Board which meets annually implements the decisions of the General Conference comprising representatives of members, associate members and observers. The conference, which is held once every four years, is the supreme authority of the Association and is responsible for determining the general policies of the Association.

As member of the Governing Board, Prof. Anangisye recently participated in the 81st AAU Governing Board Meeting that was held from the 13th to 14th February 2023 in Accra Ghana, which was convened by the President of AAU, Professor Saeed Bakri Osman.

An outstanding researcher

In addition to holding the top executive position at UDSM, Prof. Anangisye is an outstanding researcher who has researched and published widely in education mostly on professionalism and ethics in education. He holds a PhD in Education from the Moray House School of Education, University of Edinburgh, Master of Arts in Education and Bachelor of Arts with Education (Hons) both from the University of Dar es Salaam.

Prof. Anangisye has served in various boards in different capacities. He is the chairperson of the National Examination Council of Tanzania (NECTA), and the Governing Boards of Mkwawa University College of Education (MUCE) and Dar es Salaam University College of Education (DUCE). He is also a member of boards and councils at Sokoine University of Agriculture, Catholic University College of Mbeya, and Ruaha Catholic University (Iringa).
