Dr. Betina Lukwambe is a lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam's School of Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Technology (SoAF), in the Department of Aquaculture Technology. She has vast research experience in aquatic microbial ecology, aquaculture, marine biotechnology, and wastewater management. Her interest lies in the development of sustainable aquaculture technologies that are appropriate to the socio-ecological context of the Western Indian Ocean regions. She managed to publish a total of 17 international journal articles in her area of specialization. Her current research interests focus on understanding how sediment microbiomes and deposit-feeding invertebrates interact to process organic matter and how these relationships can be harnessed and manipulated to enhance stable marine and freshwater ecosystems. She is particularly interested in using novel techniques to uncover the ecological and evolutionary mechanisms underlying the distribution and dynamics of microbiomes that play major roles in nutrient cycling.
