Dr. Heriel Moshi is a specialist in the fields of Botany, Restoration/Conservation Ecology, Soil science and Renewable energy (Biofuels). He holds a PhD (Botany), MSc (Botany) and BSc. with Education (Biology and Geography) from the University of Dar es Salaam Tanzania. Dr. Moshi joined the Department of Botany in the College of Natural and Applied Sciences of the University of Dar es Salaam as a tutorial assistant in 2006. Later in 2007 he was promoted to a position of Assistant lecturer which he saved for 10 years before he was further promoted to a Lecturer position in November 2016. He has been teaching various postgraduate and undergraduate Botanical courses including but not limited to Soil science, Vegetation ecology, economic botany, Plant Physiology, Plant ecology and biogeography, taxonomy of higher plants, Anatomy of Angiosperms, Fundamentals of Soil Science, Plant Diversity and Conservation, Biological methods and techniques. Besides teaching, he has served as a coordinator of undergraduate studies at Department level while at the University level he has served as the examination quality control assurance officer under the Quality Assurance Bureau (QAB), Project Coordinator for the Natural Science Consultancy Bureau (NSCOB), Project Manager for the Natural Science Consultancy Bureau (NSCOB) and Deputy Director, QAB the post he served until 2021.

Besides the University of Dar es Salaam, he has worked in a variety of professional capacities in private and public institutions including the University of Bagamoyo and Ardhi University where he served as a part-time lecturer in Ecology and Plant anatomy. Dr. Moshi has served the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology through the National Examination Council of Tanzania (NECTA) and Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) on special education duties including writing and reviewing science books for primary schools and Biology text books for Ordinary and Advanced secondary schools between 2015 and 2021. His countries of work experience include Kenya where he spent several months at ICRAF-Nairobi working on genetic diversity of selected indigenous bio crops from Tanzania. He was a visiting faculty and scholar at the Centre for African Studies, University of Florida, USA in 2013. Dr. Moshi has attended various training including an international training course on long-term Ecological monitoring in Chinese Academy of Science, Beijing China; Molecular systematic and conservation, georeferencing, Botanical research and herbarium management systems, Remote sensing and GIS for Biosphere reserve management in the light of climate change.

Dr. Moshi is also known for his outstanding records in consulting works and publications. He has published a book and several papers in peer reviewed journals in the field of vegetation ecology and Bioenergy. His recent book is titled “Potential Natural Vegetation of Eastern Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia) Volume 10. Atlas and Tree species composition of Tanzania” published in 2014 in collaboration with a renowned ecologists including J-P.B LillesØ from University of Copenhagen. His recent paper was “Ecological Distribution and Abundance of the Parasitic Weed, Cassytha filiformis L. (Lauraceae) in Major Cashew, Anacardium occidentale L. Growing Regions in Tanzania” published in 2016 in the International Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences. 5: (3) 109-116. He has conducted over 20 environmental Impact Assessment consultancy projects on vegetation, soil quality, land use suitability and Renewable energy.

Dr. Moshi serves as a Board Member in the School of Education in the University of Dar es Salaam and beyond the University including one of the Government secondary schools.
