John completed his B.Sc at the University of Dar es Salaam in 2012 and immediately went to volunteer at the anti-poaching unit of the Selous Game Reserve for more than a year. He then joined the staff of the Department of Zoology and Wildlife Conservation of the University of Dar es Salaam, herpetology section, at the end of 2013 under the mentorship of Prof. Kim Howell. His wide interests range from natural history, biology, ecology and taxonomy of amphibian.

 

He is trained in biodiversity conservation and has conducted fieldworks in a number of remote areas across the country, surveying amphibians and reptiles for about 10 years. His interests in herpetology span from his childhood of frequently encountering chameleons and snakes during coffee harvesting and white stem borer removal in his family coffee plot at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro.  When on holidays or not doing his office duties, he likes to photograph wildlife, and he is among the National Geographic Photo Ark EDGE Fellows for Africa.
