Juma Mahmud Hussein holds a PhD in Biology with specialization in Systematics from the Uppsala University (UU), a Master in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology and Bachelor of Science General (Major in Chemistry and Applied Microbiology) from the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM)

He is a Lecturer at the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, University of Dar es Salam, Tanzania. His research focus on fungal Biodiversity, taxonomy and systematics, molecular phylogenetics as well as mushroom biotechnology for food, bioremediation, medicine & ethnomycology. 

He is fascinated by  fungal diversity, their interaction with other organisms and their potential for biotechnological applications. He uses conventional, molecular and NGS analyses such as Transcriptomics, Proteomics, Metabolomics and Biomolecular NMR to study fungi biodiversity, in aquatic, terrestrial, below ground habitats. Also his researches focuses on plant fungal pathogens and investigates mitigation measures. He explore potential use of fungi and fungal metabolites for medicinal, pharmaceutical and biotechnological applications.

Hussein like to share his knowledge and experiences with the upcoming generation. His commitments and skills to assume duties and responsibilities are grounded by a well-groomed educational background, hardworking  and collaborative spirit.
