Petroleum geology is a branch of earth science that focuses on the origin, distribution, exploration, development and production of petroleum (oil and natural gas) resources. It encompasses the study of:
- Source rocks rich in organic matter (sources of oil and natural gas).
- Geological structures and stratigraphic layers that enable the formation of subsurface oil reservoirs (traps and seals).
- Porous subsurface characteristic oil and Rock formations (petroleum deposits) that store natural gas.
The bachelor of science in Petroleum Geology offered by the University of Dar es salaam aims to provide a quality education in petroleum geology and it prepares its graduates for successful careers in various fields of the petroleum industry and science.
