The research and education programme CENSU (Climate Change, Energy, Sustainability: Transformations and Governance) is announcing FOUR MASTER grants for admission at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), toward a Masters in Climate Change and Sustainable Development (MSc. CCSD), and a Master in Natural Resources Assessment and Management (MSc. NARAM), 2022/2023.
We welcome applicants from all CENSU partner universities: University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM); State University of Zanzibar (SUZA); Universidade Lurio (UniLurio); Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (UEM)
About CENSU
CENSU is funded by the Norwegian government’s development agency. Its objective is to strengthen education and research capacity related to major development challenges in Tanzania and Mozambique: The sustainability of extraction of their energy resources, particularly oil and gas, and the implications for climate change mitigation. The project will concentrate research on current and anticipated oil and gas exploration mainly in Lindi in southern Tanzania, Zanzibar, and Inhassoro in southern Mozambique (possibly also Cabo Delgado). All CENSU research and education activity shall integrate natural and social sciences, with a view to better understand the relationship between the environmental, economic and social dimensions of sustainable development
About the grants
The duration of grant and degree programme is 18 months’ full-time. While degree completion may be extended to three years, subject to special arrangement with UDSM, the grant cannot be extended. The CENSU grants will thus cover tuition fees, monthly stipend, and travel costs to facilitate grantees to do their coursework during the first 12 months at UDSM, beginning October 2022. During the last six months, grantees will also receive an additional stipend to cover research and dissertation production costs.
About the Masters degrees
The CENSU grantees can apply to study either MSc. CCSD or MSc. NARAM. In the first year of study, the grantees are required to acquire a minimum of 120 credits, a full years’ worth of coursework at UDSM. In the second year (the last six months), they undertake fieldwork and write their dissertations (60 credits) with sending universities as bases. Academic staff from UDSM will serve as main dissertations supervisors, and academic staff from home universities as co-supervisors.

Four seats in the 2022/2023 batch are reserved for CENSU candidates, thus one seat for each CENSU partner university (UDSM; SUZA; UniLurio; and UEM). However, these seats, and the four attached grants, will be awarded only to the extent that applicants are qualified as per UDSM postgraduate admissions guidelines.

University of Dar es Salaam admission regulations will apply for these two MSc. programmes. Applicants seeking CENSU grants and admission to the M.Sc. in Climate Change and Sustainable Development and M.Sc. in Natural Resources Assessment and Management programme must hold an honours degree of relevant subject from recognized University Education Institutions inside and outside Tanzania as per Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) recognition standards.
