The University of Dar es Salaam Department of Physics has celebrated the World Meteorological Day this March, 2023 by raising awareness and promoting action towards addressing critical global challenges related to weather, climate and water.
In this event, UDSM reiterated its commitment towards addressing weather, climate and water challenges through research and education, and its role in producing the next generation of meteorological and hydrological experts. This year’s theme was "The Future of Weather, Climate and Water Across Generations”.
“Similar to this year’s theme on weather, climate and water, the World Meteorological Day 2022 reflected on Early Warning and Early Action, emphasizing the need for timely communication of weather-related risks and proactive measures to mitigate their impacts”, said Dr. Nuru Mlyuka, the Head of Department of Physics, in the College of Natural and Applied Sciences (CoNAS).
He further said that in 2021, the theme was "The Ocean, Our Climate and Weather" emphasized the crucial role of the ocean in regulating the planet's climate and the need for sustainable practices to protect this vital resource.
On this World Meteorological Day, the Physics department held a series of activities focused on the theme. The event brought together staff and meteorological students to participate in a building clean-up activity followed by presentations on topical weather and climate-related issues.
“This celebration is a reminder of the essential role played by the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services in ensuring safety and well-being of society. The day also served as a reminder of the urgent need to address the changing climate and its impact on the planet”, said Dr. Mlyuka.
Since 1961, the World Meteorological Organization has been celebrating World Meteorological Day, in different theme selected for each year. The theme for this year, "The Future of Weather, Climate and Water Across Generations," highlighted the importance of long-term planning and collaboration to ensure sustainability of the planet's resources for future generations.
