General objectives

The overall objective of this programme is to generate sufficient analytical capacity and research based knowledge and technological innovations with appropriate and immediate valuable outcomes to relevant stakeholders (policy makers, industry, civil society etc.) in addressing the problem of poverty and promoting sustainable and inclusive development. In that spirit, the UDSM research and training during 2015-2020 will be guided by its Vision 2061 to be “A leading centre of intellectual wealth spearheading the quest for sustainable and inclusive development”. Taking into consideration the various achievements from earlier support from Sida and other development partners, the proposed research and training has the following specific objectives:

  1. To increase postgraduate curricula and the extent of research training for development in key strategic and priority areas (i.e. Food Security and Agriculture, Tourism, Agribusiness, Integrated Sanitation Management, Marine Sciences, Molecular Biosciences, Mathematics in high learning education and Smart Grid).
  2. To improve research environment by increasing the utilization of equipment and infrastructure and conformance to regulations, policies and guidelines.
  3. To increase the quality and use of research relevant to high priority issues of national development
  4. To Increase partnership with local, regional and international institutions/organizations for knowledge generation, sharing and utilization of research in high priority areas

Increase postgraduate curricula and the extent of research training for development in key strategic priority areas

    1. Eight (8) PhD and Three (3) Master new taught Programmes will be developed and accredited by TCU.
    2. Two (2) PhD and four (4) Master existing Programmes will be reviewed.
    3. Thirty six (36) staff will be trained at Master level.
    4. Sixty Four (64) staff will be trained at a PhD level.

To improve research environment by increasing the utilization of equipment and infrastructure and conformance to regulations, policies and guidelines

2.1UDSM Research Agenda will be developed

2.2 Major and minor research equipment will be procured.

2.3 Two hundred and Twenty (220) papers will be published in peer reviewed journals in Tanzania.

2.4 Increased use of research facilities.

2.5 Five Hundred (500) postgraduate students will be trained in scientific writing skills.

2.6 Three hundred (300) Academic staff will be trained in postgraduate student supervision skills.

2.7 Three (3) centres of excellence and 20 multidisciplinary research groups will be established.

2.8 Twenty (20) Postdocs will be enrolled at UDSM

Increase the quality and use of research relevant to high priority issues of national development

3.1 Publications in highly ranked peer reviewed journals will be increased

3.2 Three (3) patents will be filed for IPR in local and international bodies.

3.3. Four (4) Research Dissemination conferences will be organised and hosted by UDSM units.

3.4 Ten (10) outreach programmes will be performed in local communities.

Increase partnerships with local, regional and international institutions/organizations

for knowledge generation, sharing and utilization of research in high priority areas

    1. Collaborative research with specific industries formulated
    2. Improved quantity and quality of publications in highly ranked academic peer reviewed journals.
    3. Dissemination workshops conducted
    4. Hands- on training materials/packages for UDSM and public produced based on the research outputs.
    5. Highly increased in researchers’ advisory roles in public and private institutional boards.
