The Department of Literature, Communication and Publishing is one of the two departments that form the Institute of Kiswahili Studies (IKS). The department was established alongside the establishment of IKS. This department is responsible for implementing the University of Dar es Salaam main duties of teaching, research and consultancy. Currently, the department offers various Undergraduate Degree Programme and Master’s courses.
The Department offers 17 taught courses. The mission of this Department is to prepare Swahili experts equipped with both theoretical and practical skills in the areas of teaching, research, promoting and developing Swahili and African folklore. Others include creative writing, communication, publishing, and consultancy related to the aforementioned fields.
In future, the Department looks forward to:
1. Having a Centre for Communication and Publishing Studies.
2. Broadening BA and MA programs by reviewing and improving the current programs and adding new courses;
3. Introducing the PhD degree program by coursework and dissertation.
At the moment, PhD (in Literature) is offered only by thesis. Applications for admission are administered by the Directorate of Postgraduate Studies of the University of Dar es Salaam.
