Department of Marketing
The department of Marketing was established in the year 1979 and it offers two undergraduate programmes which are Bachelor of Commerce in Marketing (B. Com Marketing) and Bachelor of Commerce in Tourism Management (B. Com Tourism Management). The total number of students enrolled in the two undergraduate programmes reached 415 in the 2021/2022 academic year. The department hosts four (4) postgraduate programmes namely Master of Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development (MEED), Master of International Trade (MIT), Master of International Business (MIB) and Postgraduate Diploma in Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development (PGDEED). The new Master programme in Tourism Management is in the final stage of its development and will also be hosted in the department.
The department has a total of 18 qualified, competent and experienced academic staff of whom thirteen (13) are PhD holders, four (4) are already in PhD studies and one (1) will register in this year 2022. The department is also served with three (3) part time lecturers mostly in the area of Tourism. The department has one (1) administrative staff. The strength of the department is in the areas of international trade, international business, tourism, entrepreneurship, services marketing and integrated marketing communications. Research and consultancies are conducted singly or jointly by members of the Department and collaborating partners from within and outside the country are in a wide range of sectors, such as entrepreneurship and enterprise development, retailing, branding, advocacy, services marketing and customer care, environmental conservation, tourism, international trade and international business.
The department hosts two research centers namely Centre for Tourism Studies and Korean Studies Center (KSC – UDSM) which is conducting research and providing knowledge on doing business between Tanzania and South Korea. The department organizes an International Conference on Sustainable Tourism in Developing Countries (ICST-DC) annually. People from all over the world are invited to come and participate. With the support from Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), the department is currently hosting two projects namely Engendering Agribusiness Entrepreneurship (ENGAGE) and another one is Innovative and Sustainable Tourism.
