On 10th January 2021, the Vice Chancelor of the University of Dar es Salaam announced the demise of Prof. Josephat Laurean Kanywanyi. He passed on at 1:20 am on 10th January 2021 at Hubert Kairuki Hospital in Dar-es-Salaam.
