NHIF Benefits package
NHIF’s benefits package covers: Registration and Consultation fees, Outpatient Services, Medicines, Diagnostic Tests, Inpatient Services, Surgical Services,Physiotherapy and Rehabilitative Services, Optical Services, Dental Services, Retirees services, Medical & Orthopedic appliances. However, the inclusion of services in the package depends on standard guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MoHSW).
Retirees Benefits
Retirees who were contributing members of the NHIF together with their legal spouses are entaitled to access health services for the rest of their lives without any other monthly contributions. However, other dependants are excluded under this package.
Special Approval Services
The matter of instituting controls on the use of expensive medical services, access to some services requires prior special approval.These services are Chemotherapy (Anti-Cancer Drugs) Immunosuppressant,Hemodialysis, Erythropoietin, Magnetic Resonance Imaing (MRI), Computarized Tomography Scan (CT SCAN), Reading glasses, orthopedic Appliances and Hearing aids.
Accredited facilities
There is a well- established network of health care facilities accredited to the National Health Insurance Fund. NHIF offers medical services to its members through a wide network of accredited health facilities throughout the country. These accredited health facilities include Public, private and Faith Based Organizations
Health Insurance at UDSM
All members of the University of Dar es Salaam Community are obliged to enrol in the National health insurance Fund (NHIF). Health insurance services are coordinated by the head of health insurance unit in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) and the Office of the Dean of Students (DoS).
Strengths
The health insurance unit at UDSM is under the Directorate of Social Services. Further, the unit is well linked to the National health insurance Fund Offices both at the National and Regional zone. Premium is paid through a matching fund for staff members and their families and for students it is paid directly as part of the direct cost.
