Abdallah Katunzi is a media researcher and journalism trainer at the University of Dar es Salaam’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication (UDSM-SJMC) in Tanzania. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Relations from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and a Master’s degree in Journalism and Communication from Makerere University, Uganda. He is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Nairobi, Kenya. He has more than 20 years of combined experience as a journalist, editor, mentor, academic, media researcher and consultant. He has authored several publications in media and communication, and his recent co-published research titled “The state of journalism reporting in Tanzania” was published in December 2022. He has been engaged in media and communication consultancies by international organisations, including UNESCO (Tanzania), the Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC) in Tanzania, africaemediterraneo based in Italy, the US-based Natural Resources Governance Institute (NRGI), Florida International Research IWASH Initiative Limited (USA); DW Akademie (Germany), GIZ (Tanzania), Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES Tanzania), the Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance (DCAF), Norwegian Church Aid (NCA), Ugandan-based African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME) etc. He has consulted with Tanzanian Government entities such as the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, the Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance (CHRAGG), the Zanzibar House of Representatives (ZHoRs), the Architects and Quantity Surveyors Registration Board (AQRB), the National Council for Technical Education (NACTE) etc. He has also worked with media organisations, including the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT), the Tanzania Media Foundation (TMF), the Tanzania Media Women Association (TAMWA), and the Journalists Environmental Association of Tanzania (JET) etc. He has extensive knowledge of the media landscape in Tanzania and other East African countries, particularly Kenya and Uganda. He is currently managing a 4-year national media research project, “The Yearbook on Media Quality in Tanzania”, that assesses the quality of journalism reporting in the country” (https://sjmc.udsm.ac.tz/yearbook/).
