DAR ES SALAAM UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF EDUCATION (DUCE)

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences-Admission

The Faculty currently offers two undergraduate degree programmes namely; Bachelor of Arts with Education (BAED) and Bachelor of Arts in Disaster Risk Management (DRM). Also, the Faculty offers three postgraduate degree programmes namely: Master of Arts in Public Administration (MAPA); Master of Arts with Education (MAED) with streams in Geography, History, Literature, Kiswahili and Linguistics and Master of Arts in Development Evaluation (MADE). Criteria for admission in each programme are indicated below.

Bachelor of Arts with Education
Students taking B.A. Education are required to take two Teaching Subjects (content). A student will be guided by the Faculty to choose two teaching subjects among the following:

  1. Geography
  2. Economics
  3. Linguistics
  4. Literature
  5. Kiswahili
  6. French
  7. History
  8. Political Science and Public Administration 

Entry Requirement
A candidate shall be deemed eligible for consideration for admission to a first-degree programme will follow the admission criteria/qualification of the University of Dar es Salaam as indicated below:

  1. Certificates of Secondary Education Examination. Certificates of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) or equivalent, with passes in FIVE approved subjects THREE of which must be at Credit level obtained prior to sitting for the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE) or equivalent;

AND

      ii) For all applicants except graduates of 2014 and 2015

Two Principal Passes in appropriate subjects in the ACSEE or equivalent with total points from three subjects not below 5 (for Arts programmes) and 4 (for Science-based programmes) based on the following grade to point conversion scale:
A = 5; B = 4; C = 3; D = 2; E = 1; S = 0.5 and F = 0 point
The minimum Principal in this case is an ‘E’ grade.


         ii) For graduates of 2014 and 2015
Two passes in appropriate subjects in the ACSEE or equivalent with total points from three subjects not below 5 (for Arts programmes) and 4 (for Science-based programmes) based on the following grade to point conversion scale:
A = 5; B+ = 4; B = 3; C = 2; D = 1; E = 0.5 and F = 0 point.
The minimum Principal in this case is a ‘C’ grade.
(Note: Principal level passes in Divinity/Islamic Knowledge are not counted)

OR

An appropriate equivalent Diploma of a GPA not less than 3.5 for Ordinary Diplomas or B+ average for Teacher Education and Health Related diplomas or Distinction for unclassified awards or B grade for Full Technician Certificates or Upper Second Class for non-NTA diplomas obtained from a college which is fully registered by NACTE and approved by the UDSM Senate.

Note:

Applicants from countries which follow an 8-4-4 education system need to complete at least one year of study at a university in their own countries before they can be considered for admission into the University of Dar es Salaam.

Bachelor of Arts in Disaster Risk Management (BA-DRM)

This programme is established to equip learners with necessary knowledge and competencies for addressing disaster risks in a wide range of contexts. Specifically, it is anticipated that through this programme, the learners will develop relevant skills that will enable them to manage disaster risks, train and undertake research field-based consultancy services in the area of disasters. It is also envisaged that the learners will also develop capacity to mainstream disaster issues during planning socio-economic development. Upon completion of the Bachelor of Arts in Disaster Risk Management, learners are expected to have attained the ability to:

a) identify, classify and assess different types of disasters and design contextual intervention mechanisms;

b) analyze hazards, disasters and associated impacts from a wide range of perspectives and apply economic, ecological, social-cultural and geo-spatial approaches to disaster identification, mitigation, adaptation and management;

c) identify toxicological and technological disasters and analyze their effect on environment and human health;

d) prepare needs assessment reports on different disasters and disseminate hazards and disaster information;

e) identify and analyze institutional and organizational responses to disaster risks and mainstream disaster issues in socio-economic planning and development frameworks;

f) develop capacity in teaching, researching and consulting on disaster and associated risks and

g) gain insight on disaster management policies and legislations at national, regional and international levels.

The course is offered on full time basis for three (3) years. Course delivery will involve face to face i.e lecture, seminars, practical, field attachment, case studies and report writing. Applicants wishing to undertake this course shall follow the University of Dar es Salaam admission regulations as indicated below:

Entry requirements

Direct entry (Form VI) qualifications: Two principal passes at A - level in any of the following subjects: Geography, Economics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics.

Equivalent qualifications: An appropriate equivalent diploma in agricultural sciences, Land Use Planning, Cartography, Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Education (Geography and Science Subjects, Natural Resources), Statistics, Demography, Medical certificates and other related diploma certificates as approved by UDSM senate with an average grade of B+ or higher.

Master of Arts with Education (MA. Ed)
M.A. (Ed.) Programme, is a full time two years (24months) programme which engages mixed modes of delivery (i.e. lectures, practicals, seminars).  Students are expected to be able to:

(i) teach arts, humanities and social sciences in secondary schools, colleges, universities and short courses;

(ii) apply education principles, approaches and theories in improving teaching and learning processes;

(iii) assess and analyze various theories, principles and concepts related to education, social sciences and arts;

(iv) identify and analyze challenges that constraint education sector in Tanzania and beyond;

(v) identify opportunities to strengthen education sector and enhance performance of students in schools and colleges;

(vi) do research on education, social sciences and arts which will contribute to new theoretical insights and practical approaches to education and promote scholarly publications; and

(vi) plan, manage and analyze educational policies, programmes and projects.

Entry Criteria
A candidate shall be deemed eligible for consideration for admission to a Masters of Arts with Education Programme if he/she has one of the following:

  • First degree in education (e.g. B.A (Ed.), or B.Ed. (Arts) degrees) from any recognised University with at least a lower second of GPA of not less than 2.7 or its equivalent. In order to take language stream of the MA (Ed.) course, one has to have studied Kiswahili, Linguistics, English or French in the undergraduate programme. For Geography stream, one must have studied Geography in the undergraduate degree.

OR

First degree in BA (Kiswahili), BA (Language Studies), BA (English), BA (Geography and Environmental Studies), BA (History), BA (Literature) and others of that trend plus a Postgraduate Diploma in Education

  • (PGDE) from any recognised institution with at least an average pass of B in their final University Examination.

Master of Arts in Public Administration (MAPA) (Evening)
The Master of Arts in Public Administration (Evening) is an evening taught programme comprising of course-work and dissertation and the duration shall be twenty four months (2 years). Coursework will run for a period of two semesters of 15 teaching weeks, with final examination at the end of each semester. The second year shall be devoted to research and writing of the dissertation. During the second semester of the first year, students will be required to develop research proposals as a preparation for research and dissertation work.
Entry requirements
Applicants will be required to have at least a first degree in public administration, political science, education with majors in public administration and/or political science or any related fields from a recognized institution of higher learning with at least a lower second GPA of not less than 2.7 or its equivalent.

Master of Arts in Development Evaluation (MADE)

Master of Arts in Development Evaluation (MADE) is also offered in the faculty. The main objective of this programme is to build the capacity of future development evaluation scholars and professionals who will have strong foundation in theoretical and methodological approaches to development evaluation. In the course of its delivery, the programme seeks to create a grounded understanding of development evaluation tasks, standards, principles, and the professional codes of ethics of development evaluators, enormous expertise in various approaches, and methods for conducting quality and credible development evaluations. It is a full time two years (24 months) programme which engages mixed modes of delivery (i.e. lectures, practicals, seminars).  Students are expected to be able to:

(i) acquire in depth knowledge and understanding of development evaluation theory and practice;

(ii) have ability to apply the gained knowledge, expertise, and practical skills to real works determined by market forces;

(iii) evaluate development interventions to the highest professional standards, appreciate and have a determination to assume their professional responsibilities; and

(iv) abide to ethical principles of the development evaluation professionals.

Entry Requirements
A candidate shall be deemed eligible for consideration for admission to a Masters of Arts in Development Evaluation (MADE) if he/she has bachelor’s degree from a recognized University with a GPA OF 2.7 and above.
