The Physical Education and Sport Science (PESS) is an Department of the School of Education that provides teaching, research and consultancy services in Physical education, sports and recreation.
The structure of the Unit comprises of 4 sections: academic, the university sports and games, the gym and the swimming pool sections all under the head of the department.
Vision:
The department envisions PESS graduates who continually enhance their job and life skills, proficient in the theory and practice of physical education and sport and play a significant role in sport and health promotion in Tanzania.
Mission:
The programme aims at advancing the theory and practice of Physical Education and Sport Sciences in the context of evolving studies in Physical Education and Sport sciences, providing teaching and research in Physical Educations and Sports Sciences in order to produce competent personal capable of entering a variety of carrier other than teaching and coaching and providing unique opportunities for interdisciplinary studies of Physical Education and sport sciences and the allied subjects. More specifically, the B.Ed. PESS programme aims to:
The Department offers undergraduate degree, Bachelor of Education in Physical Education and Sport Sciences (B. Ed-PESS) and postgraduate degree -Master of Education in Physical Education and Sport Sciences (M. Ed.PESS). The Unit also offers PhD optional courses. The Undergraduate courses bear code PE 100, PE 200 and PE 300 series. The postgraduate courses have PE 600 series. The PhD optional courses offered have SE 700 series.
The programme is run for three years in two semesters in a year. The distribution of courses for each year is measured in credits per semester.
Bachelor of Education students shall register for Physical Education, educational courses and university wide core courses. The maximum number of credits for first year is 144 while the minimum number of credits is 120.
Students shall register for Physical Education, and educational courses. The maximum number of credits during this year of study shall be 144, while the minimum number of Credits shall be 120.
Third year Bachelor of Education students shall register for Physical Education, educational courses and university wide core courses take a minimum of 84 credits. The maximum number of credits for this year of study shall be 144.

Admission Requirement:
In addition, candidates are expected to pass a Physical Fitness Test administered by the PESS Unit.
Master of Education in Physical Education and Sport Sciences
The unit offers Master of Education in Physical Education and Sport Sciences (MEd-PESS). The Unit also offers PhD optional courses. In addition, the Unit offers two electives at master levels and three electives at PhD level.
