Theophil Romward is a Lecturer at the Department of Private Law (UDSM School of Law). He joined the School in 2015 as a Tutorial Assistant. Dr. Romward holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree (LL.B Hons); a Master of Laws Degree (LL.M), both from the University of Dar es Salaam; a Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Ph.D.) from the University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom; and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice (PGDLP) from the Law School of Tanzania. He is a practising advocate of the High Court of Tanzania and the Courts subordinate thereto and Notary Public and Commissioner for Oaths. His areas of interest are Natural Resources Law, Investment Law, Regional Integration law, in particular, East Africa Community law, international labour Migration law, Citizenship Law and Immigration Law. As an advocate of the High Court of Tanzania, Dr. Romward is a member of the Tanganyika Law Society.
In building his career, particularly in Natural Resources Law, Dr. Romward served as a member of the African Mining Legislation Atlas (AMLA) Legal Research Team from 2016 to 2017 under the African Union, World Bank and African Legal Support Facility’s support. Under AMLA, Dr. Romward’s main role was to gather, study, and analyse African countries’ Mineral Laws with a view to providing comparative data aimed at supporting the African countries to maximise benefits from their non-renewable mineral resources. He has also attended various workshops and conferences with a bearing on Natural Resources Law, including the 2017 Experts Meeting for drafting the African Mining Model law in Abidjan Cote D’Ivore.
